POLYGENIC MUTATIONS INDUCED BY URETHANE IN DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER
CHOI YOUNG
Abstract
Seventy second chromosomes with Urethane treatment and the same number of second
chromosomes for control test, of Drosophila melanogaster have been analyzed to
estimate the genetic variance of sternopleural and abdominal bristle characters and its
components by means of a partial diallel cross (Design ¥± of Comstock and Robinson
1952). Mean value of two characters are not affected by Urethane. The genotypic
variance in the treated chromosomes are significantly larger than those in the control
chromosomes. Genotypic variances are mainly consisted of the additive components for
both the treated and control groups. Dominance variance is smaller than error variance
in both experiments. The error variances of the treated group for both characters are
nearly the same as those of control group.
On the basis of these findings, it is suggested that Urethane is a effective polygenic
mutagen and the maintenance of polygene mutation for bristle characters are controlled
mainly by additive genes.
